PSJA ISD members appoint first female as board president
After serving on the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo school board nearly two years, Ramona Barron now leads her colleagues as board president — the first woman to fill that position in the school district’s history.
Barron, a school board member from Alamo, was appointed by her colleagues to serve as president for the 2009-10 school year, according to a statement issued by the district. She assumed the position on Nov. 9 during the school board’s regular scheduled meeting.
Barron has served on the PSJA school board for 19 months since April 2008 when she filled a position vacated by Rogelio “Roy” Rodriguez amid a bribery scandal. She then ran for election on November 2008 and kept her place on the board.
During the Nov. 9 meeting, Superintendent Daniel King presented outgoing President Pete Garcia with a plaque as a token of appreciation for his tenure as president of the school board for the past twelve months.
The PSJA independent school district’s board of trustees is made up of the following members this year:
>>Ramona Barron — president
>>Ben Garza Jr. — vice president
>>Humberto “Bobby” Rodriguez — secretary-treasurer
>>Gilbert Herrera — assistant secretary-treasurer
>>Pete Garcia — member
>>Reymundo Gonzalez — member
>>J. Fernando Lopez — member
