Agents seize bird found in empty beer box
RIO GRANDE CITY -- Border Patrol agents found an Amazon parrot hidden in a beer box along with several other seizures along the U.S. – Mexican border last weekend, according to a news release.
On Friday evening, a group of people walking north from the Rio Grande reportedly fled after agents identified themselves.
Border Patrol was able to apprehend several individuals and found an abandoned black trash bag, in which the parrot and beer box were hidden, the release stated.
Later Friday, agents patrolling near Escobares encountered several people loading a white truck with bundles of marijuana onto the bed.
The news release stated the people fled as the agents approached but left behind 1,300 pounds of marijuana, with an estimated value of more than $1 million.
Border Patrol reported several other seizures totaling close to 3,000 pounds of marijuana over the weekend.
The bird, valued at more than $200, was taken to the Roma Port of Entry and turned over to the Customs and Border Protection’s Office of Field Operation, the release stated.
